Review: Tank Universal

Tank Universal captures the nostalgic feel of classic games like Battezone mixed with an art style similar to the movie TRON. Even the plot follows a TRON-like plot line. A person diagnosed with a terminal illness enters into a virtual reality, where he ends up in neon world primarily made up from simple polygons. There, he joins a rebellion group fighting against a murderous and oppressive dictatorship. In order to upset the seat of power, players must jump into a tank and start blasting away the opposition.

New Far Cry game in early development; will stick with Africa setting

Ubisoft's upcoming open world shooter Far Cry 2 has a lot of people expecting it will be great. So, apparently, does Ubisoft who are now in early development of the next game in the series at their Montreal studios. Videogaming247 has a quote from team member Patrick Redding who confirmed the plans during last week's Games Convention.

Interestingly, the dev team will apparently keep Far Cry 2's Africa setting for the follow-up game with Redding saying, "There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it's safe to say we'll continue to explore it." While he says other locations might be considered for other titles in the series, he adds, "I think to save time, for us, one of the reasons we chose to use the African setting is because we felt that in order to retain the Far Cry brand value, of an exotic, dangerous environment, a place that maybe people haven't had a chance to see themselves, or have seen extensively in film, television and other games, we wanted to choose Africa."

Gary Oldman joins Call of Duty: World at War

We are not quite sure how this bit of news wasn't covered more by the tons of journalists at Games Convention last week but G4TV has it on their video interview with the producer of Call of Duty: World at War. The upcoming WWII shooter has enlisted Gary Oldman to portray one of the characters in the game.

It sounds like Oldman will be voicing a Russian sergeant in the game's second campaign as the Soviets invade Berlin in the end of the War. Kiefer Sutherland has already been announced as another Hollywood actor joining the voice cast; he will be an American sergeant in the game's Pacific campaign. The title, from developer Treyarch and publisher Activision is due for release this fall.

Is Duke Nukem Forever really playable? Apparently,

The ongoing saga of Duke Nukem Forever has spilled over into the upcoming release of the Xbox Live Arcade port of the classic 1996 released shooter Duke Nukem 3D. In a new chat with Team Xbox, 3D Realms' president George Broussard is still asked about the long awaited next game in the series and Broussard sounds almost like it's ready to be shipped in a few months.

Broussard claims, "There are several hours of fairly polished game to play. We're actively testing parts of the game and getting feedback from play testers and things are coming together. It's fun, it's in focus, we know what bits are fun and which are not, and it's just a matter of time now." So we can expect our preview code next week, George? Huh? Oh well; it was worth a shot.

Shattered Horizon chooses Nvidia

Last week Futuremark announced the first details on their first PC game, the space-based zero-gravity themed first person shooter Shattered Horizon. Now comes word that Futuremark has decided to ally with graphic processor maker Nvidia by joining the company's "The Way It's Meant To Be Played" marketing program.

Basically, Shattered Horizon's dev team will work with Nvidia's engineers to make the game run well on Nvidia's GeForce processor and will also implement the PhysX game physics software support. The game is also being shown at the Nvision conference in San Jose that began on Monday.

Tiny delay for Left 4 Dead

We are not sure why other web sites are making such a big deal about this story but oh well. According to a new video interview of Valve head man Gabe Newell at Gamekings.tv, their zombie shooter Left 4 Dead has been delayed . . . but just for a few days. Instead of an early November release the game is now scheduled to appear on Nov. 20

Considering that the game was supposed to be released several months ago, a tiny few days of a delay seems like not a lot to crow about. Indeed our just released list of our most anticipated PC games for fall 2008 lists the title as coming out in "mid-November" so we are nicely covered . . unless the game gets pushed back even more.

John Carmack talks about multi-threading in Rage

When it comes to game engine programming there are few that can match id Software's John Carmack and at Intel's recent developers forum he took the stage at a keynote address to talk about how their id Tech 5 engine will use multi-threading for their upcoming action game Rage.

As reported by bit-tech.net, Carmack stated that using multi-threading, all of the rendering for Rage is offloaded onto just one processor core using id Tech 5. A separate thread handles other jobs such as "running analysis over what's being rendered, managing the streaming of information from DVDs and hard drives, decompressing all of it, transcoding the formats that are useful for GPUs, and so on." Other threads can handle features like collision detection and AI.

New Operation Flashpoint 2 images look impressive

Codemasters has been hyping up its military shooter Operation Flashpoint 2 for a little while now and at Games Convention this week they released some new and impressive looking images meant to promote the game. There's a lot of detail in the shots which suggests a highly realistic look at military battles.

Unfortunately, Codemasters's shots for the game are somewhat suspect due to the fact that it's unclear where they are in-game engine shots or CGI renders using the game's models. However if the game really does turn out to look as good as these shots it will zoom up to the top of our lists when it is released in 2009.

Crysis Warhead goes gold

While Electronic Arts already announced the game's release date several days ago, the official Crysis Warhead web site has now officially announced that the stand alone first person shooter from Crytek has officially "gone gold", meaning the game is now heading to disk duplication.

The game's release date hasn't changed; it's still due to ship on September 16 in the US with a September 12 date in Europe. The $29.95 priced title will have a somewhat shorter single player experience than the first Crysis game but will contain all of the multiplayer maps and modes that the first game did with additional maps and a new InstantActionTeam mode.
